Last month, the M&T Club held the annual SIG Poker Tournament in the Hall of Flags at Houston Hall. Over 60 M&Ts competed for prizes including an iPad, Kindle Fire, and an XBOX+Kinect. The SIG Poker event is one of the many innovative and unique recruiting events hosted exclusively for M&T students. It was an interesting way to bring students and recruiters from SIG together, giving students an opportunity to learn and interact with recruiters in a fun and unique setting.
Students arrived to a pre-tournament reception where they received M&T and SIG Poker t-shirts in addition to a customized deck of cards. Then, SIG Analyst Bill Chen, the two time World Series of Poker champion, kicked off the tournament by speaking about how the strategies of poker can be directly applied to trading. After Bill’s intriguing introduction, attendees were divided into seven tables each led by a SIG staff member who acted as the dealer. Attendees played poker as they enjoyed a catered dinner by Greek Lady. The tournament concluded with an award ceremony for the top ten players.
Planning community events has always been a passion of mine. Last year, to raise money for Autism Speaks, I organized a community 5K event that drew over 500 participants. Besides the fun of strategizing, coordinating, and overseeing the various components of a complex project, I love planning large-scale community events because they bring together diverse members of the community through a common cause.
After arriving at Penn, I sought to make this campus my home. I wanted to engage in and give back to the communities here, and I sought out opportunities to do so. As a second generation M&T student, I have felt a strong connection to the M&T community for years. As a result, joining the M&T Club Board Corporate Outreach Committee at the beginning of my freshman year was an obvious first step.
The M&T Club Corporate Outreach Committee works to develop strong relationships between companies and M&T students. We hope to demonstrate to companies that M&T students are perfect for their needs because of the rigorous nature of the program and the broad skill sets that the students gain. We host numerous events with outside companies so that these companies can get to know us and we can get to know them. These include recruitment events on campus, alumni events in NYC and Philadelphia, and interactive information sessions such as the SIG Poker tournament.
This year’s SIG Poker Tournament was a great success and we hope to see everybody there next year. Who knows, you may even win an iPad!
